Special Saturday Field Trip!

At this time, we are at maximum capacity. Thank you for your interest!
We have scheduled a tour of the historic Christian Waldschmidt Homestead Museum for Saturday, September 30th starting at 1:00. This past semester, we had Darlene West speak to us about the property and the house – now’s your chance to see it in person!
It’s in Camp Dennison. The address on Glendale Milford Rd., which incidentally is not the same street that I take constantly to get to I-75 and points east of Wyoming! It’s just outside Montgomery and Indian Hill, and not hard to find. The address for the Homestead Muesum is 7567 Glendale Milford Rd, Camp Dennison, OH 45111.
Christian Waldschmidt was a German immigrant and veteran of the Revolutionary War. As a result of his service, he got a land grant for a site near the Little Miami River, built a home, and started a community.
During the Civil War, the Waldschmidt Homestead and surrounding grounds were part of Camp Dennison, which was a mustering center used for recruiting and training troops. It also served as a hospital after the Battle of Shiloh.
Later on, it fell into disrepair. Eventually it was donated to the Ohio Daughters of the American Revolution, who have restored it and brought in a vast number of household items of the period, as well as locating some items that were originally in the house. Their collection is equal to any historic home you might visit on the east coast or in Europe. The DAR ladies lead the tours, and their wealth of knowledge is totally amazing!
The cost for the tour is $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors, and $4.00 for students and is paid the day of the tour. This would be great to take your children or grandchildren to see!
We need to provide Darlene with a headcount 10 days before the 30th so she can make sure she had enough docents to keep the tours relatively small in number.
We thought it would be great if we could combine the tour with a dinner at the neighboring Schoolhouse Restaurant! This is an original schoolhouse built in 1864 that operated as party of the Hamilton County School District from 1870-1952. There are many school-related artifacts decorating this building as well dating from the years it operated. The Schoolhouse has a history of its own! It’s been a restaurant since the 1960’s, and serves a homestyle menu with fried chicken, fish, roast beef, fried steak, etc. served family style. If you’ve never been there, it’s a real treat!
We have reached the limit for sign-ups for those going to the restaurant. Thank you for your interest! Attendees will be responsible to pay for their own meal.
The Address for the Schoolhouse restaurant is 8031 Glendale Milford Rd, Camp Dennison, OH 45111.
