What's Happening in Europe, and What Might It Portend for Us?

While authoritarianism has been on the rise among the political class, a populist reaction is taking place in response.
In 2015 the EU opened its borders to an unvetted flow of immigrants from the Middle East. This created lots of tension with EU citizens as the European and Muslim cultures began clashing, with numerous cities seeing dramatic increases in crime, including the grooming gangs in the UK.
At the same time, the European governments began moving in an increasingly authoritarian direction, most notably with crackdowns on free speech, including jailing people for “offensive” or “hurtful” comments on social media, and for praying silently in front of an abortion clinic.
These trends have resulted in a rising populism among voters that has resulted in the elections of leaders such as the Netherlands’ Geert Wilders and the UK’s Nigel Farage.
