Here are a few thoughts about David Green who is the CEO of Hobby Lobby. Many of you have heard about the Supreme Court Lawsuit that Hobby Lobby has filed against the US Government (Sebelius vs. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.) because it disagrees with 4 of the 20 methods of birth control that are mandated by Obamacare (ie one major disagreeement is the morning after pill). Green’s case was heard at the Supreme Court last week and it is thought by many that it was a clear 4-4 standoff at the hearing with Judge Kennedy being a potential unknown 5th swing vote.
A recent October 8, 2012 issue of Forbes Magazine spoke extensively about Green. Green and his family own 100% of Hobby Lobby and he ranks #79 on the list of the 400 richest Americans. Hobby Lobby and Green have become the largest evangelical benefactor in the world. Hobby Lobby takes half of total pretax earnings and plunges it directly into a portfolio of evangelic ministries. It is estimated that in Green’s lifetime giving is upwards of $500 million for the important causes he supports. Over the last four years same-store sales at Hobby Lobby have increased by an average of 8.1%, while larger competitor Michaels has averaged only .4% during the same period. A few quotes from Green…
“If you have anything or if I have anything, it is because it has been given to us by our Creator”
“You can’t have a belief system on Sunday and not live it in the other six days”.
“I think God has blessed us because we have given”.
On the subject of giving each full-time employee a dollar raise each year since 2009 to $13 an hour….God tells us to go forth into the world and teach the Gospel to every creature. He doesn’t say skim from your employees to do that.
Green’s lawsuit represents a real challenge to religious liberty and how it relates to Obamacare. This guy, David Green, seems to have the kind of rock solid character that we all would aspire to. Isn’t there a way that we can create a win-win situation with David Green and the other people that feel legitimately threatened by the religious tenants of Obamacare?
